Robert Downey, Jr. is an actor and director. His career has had a history of critical and popular acclaim in his childhood, followed by a string of legal and substance abuse problems, before a comeback of solid commercial success at the end of his adult life.
Robert Downey, Jr. was born in 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia, where he grew up with his family. He has two older sisters, Trudy and Joanne, and two younger brothers, Christopher and John. After his mother died from a stroke, his father was convicted of murdering her and served time in jail for it and then moved to California.
At the age of eleven, Robert received his first acting role in a television pilot. It was a part that earned him his first break: he played the role of an older man with a southern accent on “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”
Over the next few years, Robert became a regular cast member on “Cheers,” where he portrayed the same character: Paulie Gannacci. He has appeared in several movies, including “Get Shorty” (also known as “Hooked On Monkey Business,” and featuring his friend, Tom Cruise), “Forrest Gump,” “Grow Up,” “Dirty Work,” “The Man Who Played Dr. Frankenstein,” and the TV series “ER.” These roles gave him more opportunities and led to more roles in major motion pictures such as “American Beauty”Catch Me If You Can.”
However, his movie career was not always smooth sailing. His first starring role was “The Rainmaker,” but he was quickly turned off by the film’s script and was less than satisfied with its script and direction. It was only after his second film that he began to see his potential. The success of “Rocky” later gave him his big break.
Following his breakout, Robert Downey, Jr. has enjoyed great success with some of his own films, including Rajiv Bachan’s “Life After Beth.” He was also involved in the drama “You’ve Got Mail,” and appeared in the HBO sitcom “Cheers.” His other films include “Beverly Hills Cop” and the upcoming “Fury.”
In a career that spans three decades, Robert Downey, Jr. has seen his share of ups and downs. He’s been through some rocky marriages and difficult childhoods, but he’s always managed to turn around himself and find a way to make things right.
The truth is, Robert Downey, Jr. wasn’t born a star. He didn’t have a natural gift for acting until he was twenty years old. But, in time, he learned to turn out some good movies.
In today’s world, actors are given the chance to be whatever they want to be. They’re paid to act, and take the limelight wherever they want. There is no reason why Robert Downey Jr. shouldn’t have gotten what he’s always dreamed of.
